MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, NOON
SIXTH & MARKET
PHILADELPHIA, PA

EVERYONE KNOWS GEORGE WASHINGTON’S BIRTHDAY IS TODAY — FEBRUARY 22!

BUT WHY DON’T THEY KNOW THE BIRTHDAYS OF THE HUNDREDS OF BLACK MEN, WOMEN, AND CHILDREN HE ENSLAVED?

AND WHY DON’T THEY KNOW THAT SEVERAL OF THEM WERE ENSLAVED BY HIM RIGHT HERE IN PHILADELPHIA AT AMERICA’S FIRST “WHITE HOUSE,” LOCATED AT THE SITE OF THE NEW LIBERTY BELL CENTER?

* George Washington was born 278 years ago on February 22, 1732.

* He enslaved 316 Black human beings at his Mt. Vernon VA plantation and brought nine of them to Philadelphia beginning in 1790. It was here where he held those nine at America’s first “White House,” which was at the current site of the Liberty Bell Center at Sixth & Market and which is where the historic President’s House/Slavery Memorial will be completed in Fall 2010 when this country’s first African American president, Barack Obama, will cut the ribbon at the grand opening.

You can learn more about those nine and about the President’s House/Slavery Memorial by attending the informational demonstration and by contacting Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC), which has led the battle since 2002 for this historic Slavery Memorial.
