Underground Railroad in Philadelphia

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As you know, Avenging The Ancestors Coalition (ATAC) accepted an invitation from Independence National Historical Park to serve as its partner in the grand opening of the "Underground Railroad in Philadelphia" exhibit on July 3 at the Independence Visitors Center at Sixth and Market Streets. As part of that impressive grand opening, ATAC and many others were treated to a snippet of an emotionally riveting play entitled "True Tales of the Underground Railroad," featuring professional actors portraying such heroic personalities as William Still, the founder of the Underground Railroad and Henry "Box" Brown, the man who escaped slavery by courageously mailing himself out of the South.

Although that snippet was great, the complete version is even greater! And you can see it free of charge at the Independence Visitors Center. It will be performed six times from August 7 through August 21 as follows:

  • Friday, August 7, 12:00-12:45 and 3:00-3:45. Highlighting Charles Gilbert who hid under a hotel, in a wash-house, and under floorboards to escape slavery
  • Friday, August 14, 12:00-12:45 and 3:00-3:45. Highlighting Henry "Box" Brown
  • Friday, August 21, 12:00-12:45 and 3:00-3:45. Highlighting Ellen Craft who traveled as a white man being attended to by her husband who pretended to be her enslaved laborer.

Although ATAC generally recommends that you attend at least once on each of the three dates, we specifically request that you attend the first presentation on August 7 at 12:00. We make this request because we want to publicly display our wholehearted support from the very beginning.

Please spread the word, and please bring your family and friends.

Thank you.

Sincerely, ATAC 215/552-8751
