< Return to Events and Press Releases Youth Action Hosts Clothing Drop-Off Event to Support Haiti Relief EffortsDonate your summer or winter clothes that are new or gently used.
When: Saturday, August 7, 2010, 1-4pm PHILADELPHIA, PA (July 13, 2010) — Youth Action, a youth-led community development non-profit, (YA) will host "Clean Out Your Closet for Haiti," an event to support relief efforts in Haiti. The event will serve as a clothing donation drop-off and an effort on behalf of Youth Action to encourage Philadelphians to continue giving and providing support to the many people affected by the catastrophic earthquake in January 2010. Haiti is one of the poorest and least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere and approximately 80 percent of the population lives below the poverty line. This disaster has dashed the hopes of an already desolate country. The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the small country completely devastated the Haitian capital city, Port-au-Prince, and resulted in severe injuries and in the loss of lives, property, and buildings. Seven months after the catastrophe, many efforts are ongoing as over two million people are still displaced and living in refugee camps. "Although the earthquake occurred seven months ago, the people of Haiti are still in great need of our help. Something as simple as a clothes donation can change the lives of many people," says Event Co-Coordinator, Gabriella Jackson. "People tend to forget about disasters such as the earthquake after a couple of months. It is my hope for Youth Action and everyone in the Philadelphia area to do their part in making sure the people of Haiti are not forgotten." Youth Action asks that you come support this cause by donating summer or winter clothes that are new or gently used. The drop-off event will be held at Chosen 300 Ministries, Inc. located at 1116 Spring Garden Street, Philadelphia, PA from 1pm — 4pm on Saturday, August 7, 2010. Shirts, pants, shorts, jeans, sandals, and shoes will be accepted.Monetary donations will also be accepted. Youth Action is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization, all donations are tax deductible. Proceeds will go towards purchasing clothes to aid in the efforts. At the event, refreshments will be served and you will have the opportunity to speak with Youth Action members to learn more about the organization, its mission, and the community service that it provides to residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding areas.
